Cantina is a high contrast upright italic headline font, inspired by Italian typefaces from the 1950s. I designed it for a cookbook I did with recipes from my Italian aunt Vincenza. The food that she cooks is prepared in the original style according to recipes that are almost lost and forgotten today, even in Italy.
Since I had the idea in mind to implement my typeface in a typographical layout of a cooking book I decided to create a variable font with two variation axes that could help designing typographical hierarchies and improve legibility. That’s why I decided to design a two-axes variable font with a weight axis and an optical size axis.
